"A wonderful exhibit. The images and texts helped me understand how people in prisons see themselves---and how we see them.
Fantastic project---well conceived and expertly crafted."
"Eloquent and emotional. Each exhibit is intense and compelling. It makes me want to read more”
“I'm a high school teacher from Maine. This exhibit moved me in a way I can't explain completely, but it has opened my eyes to a great need...and for this I thank you.”
“This is a very inspirational project. Everyone deserves a second chance and this is a very wonderful opportunity. I am very glad that this program exists and gives one the ability to see the prisoners as humans with a great deal of potential.
“This program is so needed...my hope is that it will start at San Quentin and spread to other institutions. It is true that prison in the end always educates its inmates. Many times, more often than not, it just creates better criminals. Through this program these inmates are given, through an academic education, the chance to be truly free...”
“This exhibit is incredibly moving. The stories & pictures give life meaning and feeling to a part of our society that too often we choose to ignore because it's the easy thing to do. I found the writings very inspiring and I would like to thank the inmates for decided to share with us. The Prison University Project is an amazing program in which I support 100%.”
“As a fellow university student, I can see how extremely difficult self education is. I'm happy to see so many people trying to change their lives, particularly if this is their first opportunity to try. I wish all those in this program good luck and hope more find the courage to join.”
“I think people should be educated if they want to be rehabilitated & reformed. I strongly support any prison education program.
Great exhibit!”
“I just saw your exhibit and was very impressed. Great job of taking initiative to improve yourselves despite being in a correctional facility – where so many choose to be bitter and not move forward; each of you are working to better your future. You should be proud! –Tim”
"At first I was angered, why should these 'criminals' get an education, when other 'law abiding' citizens can't. After walking through and reading the quotes, I saw human beings who need this project to rebuild their lives. Lives that were taken from them proobably at very early ages. Thank you for opening my eyes and giving these men HOPE!!"
