I filled out the survey, but I haven’t heard from you. Does this mean I haven’t been selected?
It takes several weeks, and even sometimes up to a month, for us to place volunteers prior to each semester. We will contact all volunteers who applied to work with us, whether or not they are placed, and we appreciate your patience while we plan for the semester.
I wasn’t selected to volunteer this semester. Why not?
Volunteer placements are made with considerations of availability, qualifications, teaching experience, and diversity, and some semesters we have more potential volunteers than we can place. Please consider volunteering as a tutor as well as a classroom instructor, and be sure to indicate as much availability as possible.
Would it be possible for me to teach my area of specialty?
Because we offer an AA in General Studies with a third of our courses focusing on college preparation in writing and math, most of our courses are introductory, but sometimes we do have room for a more focused course within a discipline. Don’t hesitate to ask if you have an idea.
My area of expertise (ethnic studies, gender theory, queer theory, African American studies, etc.) isn’t listed as a course offering. What should I do?
Our course offerings are limited by space, our accrediting university, and student needs, but we believe that topics that introduce students to academic modes of understanding diversity can and should be woven into other courses on a regular basis. We highly encourage you to consider incorporating your area of specialization into a composition course or more general course in which your area of expertise lies.
May I design my own course or are there set syllabi?
While we oversee syllabus-creation to ensure consistent, high-quality courses comparable to courses outside prison, we encourage instructors to develop their own curricula. The preparatory courses offer set syllabi from which instructors may deviate, with oversight of college program coordinators.
Should I indicate availability for any course I think I could plausibly teach? Or should I limit it to my own area of expertise?
For courses other than composition and mathematics, we appoint instructors who have graduate level experience in the topic of the course. Please indicate interest in courses in which you have expertise.
